South Bay is an aerial view of the southernmost part of San Francisco Bay. What appears to be fields of farmland are actually salt ponds (basins of highly salinated water for industrial salt production). These ponds occupy the land where essential wetlands once thrived. Many of these ponds will be restored to wetlands as part of the 2002 wetlands protection effort. If all goes well in the coming years, much of this landscape will be radically transformed and the bay will be healthier and more resilient.
