There are approximately 1400 dams in the state of California. Only a handful of free flowing rivers and streams remain – the rest are fragmented by dams. Dams have played a major role in the decline and extinction of native California fish species: approximately 67% are either extinct or in decline. Freely flowing rivers provide better water quality and their ecosystems are healthier; they support more fish, wildlife and plant species. Rather than continuing to build more dams, it’s important that we put effective water conservation policies in place to have a sustainable future.
