This two-layer artwork tells a story of ruin and resilience of the forest in Big Basin Redwoods State Park. In August 2020, the CZU Lightning Complex Fire devastated the park. It destroyed ancient redwoods, Douglas-firs, and other trees. The back layer of the artwork shows the severely burned areas from that fire. The front layer uses images of tree leaves and cones to show tree regrowth.* Notice how much of the park burned severely. Notice how much the forest ecosystem has regrown in only three years. The long-lived redwoods are resprouting. New knobcone pine and Douglas-fir seedlings are growing from fire-activated cones. The healing of this land will take decades and centuries. This snapshot in time shows hope for the resilience of the forest.
