Original Statement from 2004: Summer is fire season in the American West. I grew up in Southern California and every year the wild lands around us would burn. The smell of smoke in the air and the brilliant sunsets caused by airborne ash and gases are indelible memories. The destruction is devastating: homes are lost and whole ecosystems vanish. At the same time, the fire is the shadow side to the beauty of renewal. I often wonder if fire is nature's way of reclaiming its wild lands and giving them a chance to regrow into their truly wild state.
Updated 2017 Statement: I made the artwork “Reclamation” in the summer of 2004 when numerous wildfires were burning across the state of California - it felt as though the whole state was burning. Little did I know how much worse it could get: In 2004 there were 7,898 fires that burned 311,024 acres of land. Compare that to 2017 when 9,133 fires burned 1,381,405 acres and in 2018 when 8,527 fires burned 1,893,913 acres.
