Fish & Wildlife Crew and Helicopter Surprise
While exploring Sixty Lakes Basin, Rob veered off on a use trail and came upon a pile of garbage bags and gear and 3 young women who had spent the summer removing non-native trout from the originally fish-less lakes in the basin along with their male supervisor who had been there for the last two weeks. We hadn't had the basin to ourselves afterall! As I walked to meet up with Rob, I noticed a pink-X of flagging tape which I recognized from my search and rescue days as a helicopter landing zone marker. It turns out that this was the crew's last day in Sixty Lakes Basin and the Park Service helicopter was due to arrive within a few minutes to transport their gear (but not them); they invited us to stay for the landing if we wanted to. With a leisurely day ahead of us, why not? It was quite unexpected to experience a helicopter landing in this remote basin.
