Los Gatos Creek: Swimming Through Time is a digitally designed artwork for the glass window lobby façade of Vitalia Apartments, an affordable housing development in San Jose, CA. The artwork focuses on what has attracted people to live in this area for thousands of years, telling a very local story about the relationship between humans and the water and land they need to survive. Los Gatos Creek flows nearby, just a half mile away. For thousands of years, and continuing to today, this creek has been a source of sustenance and refuge for people and animals.
The artwork portrays the changes to the creek and surrounding landscape as a timeline going back 10,000 years. The timeline begins in the era of the Indigenous people when the creek was abundant with beaver, steelhead and salmon, followed by the arrival of the settlers and colonialists and the extinction of beaver and fish, followed by contemporary times where water cleanup and restoration efforts are bringing back the beaver and salmon. The top windows are a birdseye view of the land around Los Gatos Creek and the bottom windows show a cross-section view of Los Gatos Creek, each corresponding to the same timeline.
The building owners, Affirmed Housing, installed an interpretive plaque to share the historical research that informed the artwork. A QR-code on the plaque links to a 12-minute long video with additional background (see below).
The QR code on the plaque in front of Vitalia Apartments links to this video. It's is an educational presentation about the historical and science concepts depicted in the window design.
