Puzzle of Salt shows a birds-eye view of Corkscrew Slough and Bair Island, near Redwood City, California. Over the past 150 years, many of the wetlands of the San Francisco Bay have been converted into salt ponds for industrial salt production. Today, 95 percent of the Bay’s wetlands are gone, leaving the bay ecosystem in an unhealthy state. Luckily new wetlands restoration efforts are underway here. The title Puzzle of Salt has double meaning: it refers to the shape of the salt ponds, which look like jigsaw puzzle pieces, and it refers to the puzzle to be solved in restoring wetlands by resolving the technical, environmental, financial and political challenges.
